The Importance of Evidence Based Practice Guidelines for Dental Treatment of Medically Complex Patients - ONSITE

This seminar focuses on treatment concepts and modalities for medically complex patients particularly with hemodynamically unstable conditions like cardiac and valvular diseases, hematological disorders, patients on cancer therapy as well as common conditions like uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension. Available current guidelines for dental treatment of such conditions in a safe environment reducing post operative complications will be discussed. Program will also focus on preventive modalities in general and particularly for such patients so that dental disease is prevented by adequate home care.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Acclimatize themselves with the various ways of determining a safe working environment for people with complex medical conditions.
  • Appreciate the complexity of health issues and how that impacts the oral health of persons with complex medical conditions.
  • Classify patients with complex medical conditions into categories so that to evaluate the risk benefit ratio of the oral health treatment and its impact on their general health.
  • Assess and apply safe practice protocols for various oral procedures involved with individuals having complex medical conditions.
  • Follow guidelines for better patient oral health care as deemed by evidence-based practice principles and incorporate them in their regular practice.
  • Adopt principles of preventive oral health care and promote them for better patient care especially for patients with complex medical conditions.
