Do you have enough exam gloves?
Recent news reports indicate a possible shortage of medical exam gloves, in part due to the Olympic Games in Beijing where many vinyl gloves are manufactured. China is temporarily shutting down plants near the Olympic site to reduce pollution during the games. Other factors limiting the number of gloves exported are higher cost of raw materials and transportation and a lower value of the U.S. dollar.

The Business Journal Serving Greater Milwaukee reports Milwaukee-area hospital systems were notified of the possible shortage in early July. As a result, area health care systems are increasing inventories of vinyl and nitrile exam gloves to prepare for a shortage expected to last through 2008.

In addition, the Star Courier reports Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. recently said they have had a tougher time buying and receiving vinyl exam gloves used by nurses and doctors at the hospital and its satellite facilities. The hospital said it first noticed the problem back in July as the deadline for the games neared, when orders and shipments of the exam gloves were delayed.

Dentists may wish to talk to their dental suppliers to see if they will be impacted by this reported shortage.
